If China, Russia and America don't need it, why do we?"4.03.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 12th Jun 2008
Lib Dem MP, Jenny Willott has presented to parliament a Bill in parliament to remove DNA records for individuals who are not charged or are acquitted of crimes in an attempt to stem the flow of personal data held by government agencies on British citizens. Jenny is calling for all innocent people to have their details removed from the DNA database. Currently, one million people who have not being convicted of any crime have their names on the database. Commenting Jenny said "There are over one million innocent people who have their DNA permanently on the DNA database. "As well as the loss of civil liberties, all the evidence shows that continuing to take, analyse and store innocent people's DNA has not improved crime detection rates. In fact the cost of doing so means fewer resources for frontline policing." "Our Criminal Justice system was built on the principle of innocent until proven guilty. We need to bring that principle back by allowing innocent people to get their DNA removed from the database."
Crawley Lib Dem Council leader and Northgate Councillor Gordon Seekings said "Even more worrying is that over 100,000 innocent people who have their DNA permanently on the DNA database are children. That's the same number as the population of Crawley!" Ending Gordon repeated the quote of Lib Dem MP Lorely Burt "If China, Russia and America don't need it, why do we?"
